The English Club

The English Club Started in January, 2000, as an after-school English club, one day per week. Students were involved in several projects including making pizza and conducting a mini play of Alice in Wonderland in English.

The following is the list of some of the activities conducted by the english club for the acadmic year of 2000-2001. The club meets twice per month during school hours, for one hour and thirty minutes at each session.

Semester 1:

Starwars Movie Theatre: Students planned a movie theatre and learned how to buy and sell popcorn, drinks and tickets. At the end of the semester, the movie theatre was opened for students grades 1 to 3. A large screen presentation of "Starwars" was shown in the school gymnasium, and many students enjoyed the film.

Semester 2:

1."Green Eggs and Ham": Students worked hard to learn Dr. Suess's "Green Eggs & Ham." by dividing it into parts, and reciting it as a mini-play at the end of the year. For some students, this was there first experience with learning to read English. They improved their listening and pronunciation skills with the aid of a video story-book version of this popular children's book.

2: Homemade Pizza!: Students were introduced to the history of pizza. Then they cooked delicious homemade pizza from scratch, while following instructions spoken in English.

3: Treasure hunt in the park.: Students divided into pairs and one gave directions to the other in English, following a treasure map of the park. Students found small prizes, (stickers and invitations to the Halloween party,) which were hidden at appropriate locations by the teacher in advance of the club meeting.

4: Halloween Party: Students learned a little about the history of Halloween. Then they made costumes, and played Halloween games. In addition, they watched Charlie Brown's Halloween and enjoyed some candy.

6: Thanksgiving: Students were shown a pictoral history of Thanksgivings origins, from the fleeing of the Puritans from England to the breakdown of Pilgrim-Indian relations after the "First Thanksgiving." Students learned vocabulary and did an English word-search of Thanksgiving terms.

Semester 3:

1: Yonkomamanga: Students made original four picture comics in English.
